Is there anyone who wouldn’t think of the two great composers Johann Sebastian and Joseph when he hears the names Bach and Haydn? Yet both Bach’s sons and Haydn’s brother Michael were likewise masters of their art. Of the rarely-performed works, the Michael Haydn Requiem may seem oddly familiar to some listeners. One of the very first people to hear the work when it appeared in 1772 was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the music made such an impression on him that he used it 20 years later as a model for his own Requiem. The most famous of the Bach sons, Carl Philipp Emanuel, was known for his revolutionary compositions; with their characteristic abrupt changes of mood, his »Hamburg Symphonies« demonstrate the »Sturm und Drang« (Storm and Stress) movement that emerged in the 1770s.
