Everyone knows the first bars of Charpentier’s »Te Deum«: it is the secret European anthem. Whenever the European circle of gold stars flickers across the TV screen, this melody can be heard in the background. The work was originally written as a tribute to Louis XIV: the Sun King gathered the best artists of the day around him and used them to glorify himself. Jean-Baptiste Lully was in charge of music at the royal court, and after him Michel-Richard Delalande. Magnificent sacred motets like »De Profundis« were written for royal funerals: serious occasions called for a splendid backdrop as well. With Klaas Stok conducting, the NDR Chor revives the world of the French Baroque together with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and a team of international soloists.
