In the 16th and 17th centuries, the five domes of St Mark’s Basilica in Venice represented the centre of the European music universe. From there, the magnificent polychoral music of the Venetian School exerted its influence across the whole of Europe. This early-Baroque art with its multi-facetted sounds is as if made for the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble. With works by the Venetian master Giovanni Gabrieli and his student Heinrich Schütz, the musicians – under conductor Howard Arman – take the audience on a journey to bustling, thriving Venice of the 17th century.
