Archie Shepp is one of jazz’s true legends: over the last 60 years, the saxophonist, composer, singer and pianist has been highly influential in the scene, released countless albums and consistently pushed things forward. He is also a Professor of Music and writes plays and poems. As part of the Reflektor festival curated by André Heller, he will be performing as a saxophonist and singer with the French songwriter and chanson and jazz singer Marion Rampal, with whom Shepp has been working since 2012.
At one of their joint concerts at the »Parfum de Jazz« festival in France, Archie Shepp modestly described himself as a »sideman« to Marion Rampal – the change of perspective resulting from not being the sole focus of attention is something he finds very relaxing. The programme »There Is Love«, named after a ballad, is a nod to older songs by Shepp and a platform for new pieces he composed for this special line-up. Together, they weave a fine sound, influenced by Shepp’s blues melancholy, allowing the warmth of Rampal’s voice and Shepp’s saxophone to organically converge.
