Earth, Air, Water, Fire

As part of the triennial exhibition »Currency: Photography Beyond Capture« in the Deichtorhallen Hamburg, the world-famous American string quartet Brooklyn Rider – which is known for its experimental approaches and captivating performances – presents an excerpt from its concert programme »Earth, Air, Fire, Water«. A homage to the beauty and fragility of our planet – coinciding with the 2022 Hamburg International Music Festival, which has »Nature« as its theme this year.

The theme is also aligned with an important chapter in the exhibition that explores nature and the trail of destruction humankind has left in it. Focusing on landscapes shaped by factors such as military occupation or extractive capitalism, photographers such as Ragnar Axelsson, Sheik Fazal and Anne-Marie Filaire present a counter-map of the Anthropocene. For the 8th triennial of Photography Hamburg in 2022, the exhibition »Currency: Photography Beyond Capture« explores artistic engagement with photography in the »retinal era«, in which images not only document themes and events, but also fundamentally influence how we see the world.
