Bertrand Chamayou / »Total Ravel«
Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival
Bertrand Chamayou has a truly gigantic project in store for the audience of the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall on this night. Playing Ravel’s complete piano works in one evening is an ambitious feat for even the greatest of piano players and many find one of these pieces in particular – »Gaspard de la nuit« – unplayable.
Ravel wrote »Gaspard de la nuit« with the firm intention of penning the most difficult piano piece of all time. However, the shimmering tone picture »Jeux d’eau« (Playing Water), which imitates the sound of cascading water, and the harmonically audacious suite »Miroirs« also pack quite a punch.
As well as a brilliant, virtuosic aspect, Ravel also had a delicate, sensitive side, and the composer was able to express profound emotions with just a few notes, as in the captivating »Pavane pour une infante défunte« (Pavane for a Dead Princess).
Bertrand Chamayou, who recently released a recording of Ravel’s complete piano works to great critical acclaim, now performs Ravel’s complex and multifaceted piano pieces live at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival.
