Belcea Quartet
Haydn / Janáček
One of the world’s top string quartets is welcomed for the finale of the String Quartet series in the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall: the Belcea Quartet. Whether performing the traditional repertoire or promoting contemporary music – the quartet is regularly awarded distinctions such as the ECHO Klassik or Diapason d’or. The Belcea Quartet now guarantees the highest highs of string quartet culture with works by Joseph Haydn and Leoš Janáček.
In his two quartet masterpieces of 1781 and 1799, Haydn explores diverse spheres of experience ranging from the high-spirited to the bleak and bizarre, from classical elegance to the contrapuntally refined. Then, in the two string quartets by Czech composer Leoš Janáček, masterpieces of classical modernism, the love-struck composer is at times exuberant and euphoric, at times tender and gentle – as in his Quartet No. 2 »Intimate Letters«.
