The Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is, without doubt, one of the most renowned public radio orchestras of all time. It has been shaped by famous principal conductors such as Rafael Kubelik and Lorin Maazel, but Maestro Mariss Jansons has taken the sonic identity of the orchestra to a new level altogether in recent years. »For me, as a conductor, it’s like driving a Rolls Royce. This orchestra can do just about anything,« says Jansons. He has been the brilliant and exciting leader of this luxury ensemble since 2003.

The Latvian conductor brings his Munich-based orchestra to the Elbphilharmonie twice. First, they present a work by Janson’s favourite composer Richard Strauss, the tone poem »Also sprach Zarathustra« (Thus Spoke Zarathustra). Then they return on 30 April 2018 with a performance of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 7, based on the new critical edition of the International Gustav Mahler Society.

Framed by these two concerts with Jansons is Johannes Brahms’s »Deutsche Requiem« (A German Requiem), conducted by Bernard Haitink. He headed the Concertgebouw Orchestra for nearly 30 years. At the age of almost 90, the Dutch conductor is one of the great living legends of the classical music world.
