Avi Avital / Giora Feidman
Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival
Exactly what I would have written myself, had I the talent for it – that was Avi Avital’s first reaction to the mandolin concerto dedicated to him, which he had commissioned from Avner Dorman. The composer was born in Israel in 1975 and has previously written a magnificent percussion concerto specially for Martin Grubinger. Dorman has catered perfectly to Avital’s taste by endowing the work with that stylistic variety for which Avital is so famous. The piece includes Baroque elements as well as influences from the music of the Middle East, Bluegrass, Brazilian melodies and Italian film scores.
Anna Clyne, the winner of the International Hindemith Competition last year, has also composed a new work for Avital, and it – like Dorman’s piece – was also inspired by the mandolin player’s approach to making music.
Avi Avital and Giora Feidman have also mutually spurred each other to greater heights: »He is my mentor, adopted grandfather, colleague and friend, all in one«, says Avital about the great clarinetist.
