Alexandre Kantorow, piano
FAST LANE – Young top musicians getting ready for a big career
Romantic fire
French pianist Alexandre Kantorow won one of the top prizes in the world of classical music, the gold medal at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition in 2019, and since the he has literally been swamped with offers of concert engagements. At Easter 2022 he carried conviction at a concert with Teodor Currentzis and his ensemble in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall. He is making his recital debut in the Recital Hall with works by Brahms and Schubert and with Schubert lieder arranged by Franz Liszt.
Alexandre Kantorow grew up in a musical family: his father is the violinist Jean-Jacques Kantorow. He studied with Frank Braley at the Conservatoire de Paris and attended master classes given by Jean-Philippe Collard and Georges Pludermacher.
Apart from Saint-Saëns piano music, Kantorow is particularly fond of Brahms. At his Hamburg recital he plays Brahms’s Piano Sonata No. 1, a fiery and virtuoso piece brimming with youthful passion. As another work that challenges any virtuoso, Schubert’s »Wanderer« Fantasy is a good match. In the final part of his recital, the French pianist plays Schubert lieder in the brilliant, sophisticated arrangements by Franz Liszt.
