Alexander Melnikov / Piano Recital
Hamburg International Music Festival / Spotlight Alfred Schnittke
Richter’s legacy
The Russian pianist Alexander Melnikov is an exceptional phenomenon in the global classical music scene. »He moves between an interest in historic music-making and his great model Sviatoslav Richter, which are difficult to reconcile«, summarised SWR. »That is an immense contrast, but it’s always worth listening to Melnikov – and sometimes I wish his playing would never end.«
Melnikov was mentored by the great master Richter from an early age, and he has undoubtedly mastered the latter’s powerful touch. Melnikov is also very interested in early music and the delicate sounds of the harpsichord and fortepiano. His chamber music partners include greats such as the violinist Isabelle Faust and the cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras.
