»The bells started ringing and the world was filled with sound and colour…« - thus Einojuhani Rautavaara’s description of a visit to Finland’s Valamo monastery in 1939 that inspired him to write »Vigilia«. – »As I worked on the composition, I gradually assumed the Orthodox mantle«. Rautavaara’s »Vigilia« is a work for mixed choir and soloists, where the soloists stand for the individual, while the choir symbolises the Christian community. At the instigation of conductor Nils Schweckendiek, Rautavaara later transformed the liturgy-based original version for concert performance into a kind of »endlessly flowing symphonic poem for choir«. But the aura of deeply-felt Orthodox spirituality is still very much in evidence.
