Swan songs in Cinemascope
Two late works that could not be more intimate: Robert Schumann’s last orchestral work dates from 1853, and is often seen in connection with his mental illness. The piece has regularly been the source of fierce debate. But Robert’s wife Clara Schumann and the famous violinist (and friend of the Schumanns) Joseph Joachim were impressed from the outset. Tonight offers the chance to hear a rare performance of Schumann’s Violin Concerto in the Laeiszhalle – with Daniel Lozakovich as soloist.
After the interval comes Tchaikovsky’s sixth and last symphony, whose programmatic subtitle »Pathétique« is well deserved. »My new symphony is a programme symphony,« the composer himself wrote, »whose programme, however, shall remain a puzzle to everyone – let them wrack their brains over it. This programme is entirely subjective, and on more than one occasion on my country walks I was composing the music in my mind and found myself crying bitter tears. The form of this symphony offers much that is new: among other things, the finale will not be a noisy allegro, but rather a long drawn-out adagio.«
