Description

In the 1950s, Hamburg’s youth was completely crazy about jazz. Many young people formed bands modeled after their American or English idols. 1956 saw the birth of the Old Merry Tale Jazzband, which quickly became one of the best-known and most popular German jazz bands after its initial local successes. They created their own distinctive sound, which was inspired by their jazz idols but never copied them in detail. Their greatest success was the German song »Am Sonntag will mein Süßer mit mir segeln gehen« (On Sunday, my sweetheart wants to go sailing with me), which kept the band at the top of the charts for several weeks.
