»Aller Abschied ist schwer« - diese banale Redewendung wird in Gustav Mahlers Neunter Sinfonie zum tief berührenden Hörerlebnis. Wie viel Stille und Entschleunigung kann man eigentlich ertragen? Geradezu unerhört viel Zeit nimmt sich Mahler, das Hauptmotiv des letzten Satzes immer weiter in die Breite zu ziehen, in unendlicher Langsamkeit verstummen zu lassen. Ein einzigartiger, sprachlos machender Sinfonieschluss! Und einer mit symbolischer Bedeutung: Das Motiv, das hier so konsequent gedehnt wird, ist eine Standard-Floskel romantischer Musik. Der sogenannte »Doppelschlag« begegnet uns in Dutzenden Werken von Chopin bis Wagner. Es ist, als wären wir Zeugen, wie diese geliebte Tradition nun vor unseren Ohren ihr Leben aushaucht und einer neuen musikalischen Ära Platz macht … Kein Wunder, das Theodor W. Adorno Mahles Neunte einmal als das »erste Werk der Neuen Musik« bezeichnete. Es scheint, als wolle der Komponist hier bewusst die Tradition auflösen. Die alten Formen und die große romantische Geste sind nur mehr als vage Erinnerungen spürbar. Als letzte vollendete Sinfonie weist die Neunte zudem schicksalhaft auf Mahlers eigenes Ende voraus. So ist diese Sinfonie - wie es Willem Mengelberg formulierte - Mahlers Werk des Abschieds »von allen, die er liebte und von der Welt und von seiner Kunst, seinem Leben, seiner Musik«.

Since 1908, the Laeiszhalle has been a meeting place for Hamburg's musical life. The neo-baroque Laeiszhalle Grand Hall accommodates over 2,000 guests. (Please note: The Laeiszhalle is a separate concert hall located three kilometres away from the Elbphilharmonie.)

Facilities for ladies are located behind the cloakrooms on all floors. Facilities for gentlemen can be found on the landing between the floors, also located behind the cloakrooms.
A fully accessible toilet for persons with mobility disabilities is located behind the cloakroom on the ground floor (Parkett links).

Please note: There are several construction sites in the immediate vicinity of the Laeiszhalle which may make it difficult to get to the concert. Please therefore plan enough time for your journey to the concert.
The Laeiszhalle is a separate concert hall located three kilometres away from the Elbphilharmonie.
We suggest visitors arrive at the Laeiszhalle main entrance not later than 30 minutes before the start of the concert or event. Late seating is not guaranteed and latecomers may not be admitted to the concert hall.
The entrance of the Recital Hall is located on Gorch-Fock-Wall.
