Joseph Haydn - wem sonst als dem »Vater der Klassik« könnte im Jahr seines 200. Todestages die Ehre gebühren, die neue Spielzeit des NDR Sinfonieorchesters zu eröffnen? Mit seinen frühen Sinfonien, zu denen auch dieses Werk in der für damalige Verhältnisse ungewöhnlichen Tonart E-Dur gehört, legte Haydn den Grundstein für die Entwicklung der Gattung. Knapp 70 Jahre später wagte Hector Berlioz den Schritt in eine neue Ära: Mit seiner Symphonie fantastique etablierte er die außermusikalisch motivierte Programmmusik als Gegenpol zur klassischen Sinfonie. Der Untertitel »Episoden aus dem Leben eines Künstlers« ist dabei durchaus autobiografisch zu verstehen. Wie der Hörer der »idée fixe« zu verschiedenen musikalischen Schauplätzen folgt, zum Ball, aufs Land, sogar zum Hexensabbat, so begleitete der bis über beide Ohren verliebte Berlioz die irische Schauspielerin Harriet Smithson während ihrer Gastspiele in Paris. Gast dieses Abends ist der Schweizer Cellist Christian Poltéra. Der »Sänger auf dem Cello« feiert sein Hamburger NDR-Debüt mit Schostakowitschs genialem 1. Solokonzert.

Since 1908, the Laeiszhalle has been a meeting place for Hamburg's musical life. The neo-baroque Laeiszhalle Grand Hall accommodates over 2,000 guests. (Please note: The Laeiszhalle is a separate concert hall located three kilometres away from the Elbphilharmonie.)

Facilities for ladies are located behind the cloakrooms on all floors. Facilities for gentlemen can be found on the landing between the floors, also located behind the cloakrooms.
