Mezzosoprane stehen im alltäglichen Opernbetrieb ja stets ein wenig im Schatten der Soprane – das gängige Repertoire weist eben bevorzugt den höchsten Stimmlagen die führenden Rollen zu. Gewitzte Mezzos suchen daher gerne in der Alten Musik ein zusätzliches, weitgehend konkurrenzloses Betätigungsfeld, teilen sie sich doch dort seit Aussterben der Kastraten die prächtigsten Hosenrollen mit einer kleinen Handvoll von Countertenören. In diesem Bereich ist Magdalena Kozená neben Cecilia Bartoli die international meistbewunderte Mezzosopranistin: Ihre Interpretationen barocker Musik genießen weit über den Kreis eingeschworener Originalklang-Liebhaber Kultstatus und haben wesentlich dazu beigetragen, Alte Musik neu im Konzertleben zu verankern. Seit ihre internationale Karriere 1995 mit dem Gewinn des Salzburger Mozart-Wettbewerbs ihren Ausgang nahm, hat die gebürtige Tschechin vor allem mit Musik von Bach, Händel, Gluck und Mozart bleibende Maßstäbe gesetzt. Dass ihr neben dem 18. auch das frühe 17. Jahrhundert ein Anliegen ist, zeigt sie nun in einem Recital, das zu den Anfängen des Sologesangs zurückführt: Die klingenden »Liebesbriefe« der führenden Madrigalisten um 1600 sind vokale Kostbarkeiten, denen nur eine begnadete Sängerin wie Magdalena Kozená ganz gerecht werden kann -–die höchste Kunstfertigkeit der Stücke bändigt sie mit vollendeter Gesangstechnik und stilistisch authentischem Ausdrucksvermögen.

Since 1908, the Laeiszhalle has been a meeting place for Hamburg's musical life. The neo-baroque Laeiszhalle Grand Hall accommodates over 2,000 guests. (Please note: The Laeiszhalle is a separate concert hall located three kilometres away from the Elbphilharmonie.)
