An Evening of Zarzuela

With her zarzuela recital, Spanish soprano Laura Alonso Padín brings wit, charm and Mediterranean joie de vivre to the Elbe. Accompanied by acclaimed musicians, she has put together a programme of pieces from the best-loved zarzuelas: in the 19th century, Spanish musical theatre was particularly popular, and like operetta, it treated subject matter both tragic and comic, both folksy and heroic. The most successful zarzuela was probably »La Tempranica« by Jerónimo Giménez, from which several numbers are heard tonight.
