Description
»Passion, precision, warmth – a gold blend: these are the trade marks of this excellent Israeli string quartet«, wrote one New York Times critic in praise of the Jerusalem Quartet. Since the ensemble was founded in 1996, the Israeli musicians have undergone a maturation process that now allows them to draw on a broad repertoire and tonal depth, without sacrificing any of their extraordinary energy and curiosity.
In 2020, the ensemble finished the complete recording of its Bartók cycle. Both albums received outstanding reviews, and the concert in Hamburg would not be complete without a string quartet by the Hungarian composer. Béla Bartók’s Fifth String Quartet captivates listeners with its folkloric core. At the heart of the work, we find folk themes with the irregular rhythms typical of Bulgarian folk music.
We then head to more northern climes with Piotr I. Tchaikovsky’s First String Quartet. The simple Ukrainian folk melody at the beginning of the second movement moved Leo Tolstoy to tears when the work was performed in Moscow in his honour in 1876.
