Fast alle seine Streichquartette widmete Dmitri Schostakowitsch dem russischen Beethoven-Quartett, in dem Absolventen des Moskauer Konservatoriums spielten. Das elfte Quartett von 1966 erinnert an dessen verstorbenen zweiten Geiger Wassili Schirinski und entpuppt sich als suitenhafte Reihung von sieben unterschiedlichen Sätzen. Die Partitur des zwölften Streichquartetts ist hingegen dem ersten Geiger Dmitri Zyganow zugedacht. Es gilt als Schostakowitschs modernstes Werk: Erstmals nutzt er Arnold Schönbergs Zwölftontechnik, geprägt durch expressive Dissonanzen. Offenbar suchte er im Entstehungsjahr 1968 die Anbindung an die westliche Avantgarde, die in seiner sowjetischen Heimat lange verpönt war. Eher klassisch-ausgewogen gibt sich das Streichquartett Nr. 10. Schostakowitsch schrieb es 1964 in unglaublich kurzer Zeit. Zuvor hatte er erfahren, dass sein Kollege Mieczyslaw Weinberg mehr Quartette geschrieben hatte als er selbst – das weckte seinen sportlichen Ehrgeiz. Das Jerusalem Quartet präsentiert in dieser vierten Folge seiner Schostakowitsch-Gesamtschau also ein sehr facettenreiches Programm.

We suggest visitors arrive at the Laeiszhalle main entrance not later than 30 minutes before the start of the concert or event. Late seating is not guaranteed and latecomers may not be admitted to the concert hall.
The entrance of the Recital Hall is located on Gorch-Fock-Wall.
