Lucky bag of the moment

»When Hauschka comes on to the stage, he looks for a challenge in the lucky bag of the moment,« wrote Die Zeit about the composer, pianist and master of improvisation. And there is no disputing the status of the Düsseldorf artist – his real name is Volker Bertelmann – as someone with a love of experiment who opens up new horizons to wide effect. The focus of his act is generally his piano, which he prepares with all manner of everyday objects. Armed with chopsticks, erasers, tin foil or table tennis balls, the familiar instrument opens the gates on a soundscape that is literally without bounds.
