Apotheose des Tanzes

A Canadian living in New York: Matthew Ricketts, born in 1986, is one of the younger generation of composers on the other side of the Atlantic who are big stateside yet still widely unknown in this country and well worth discovering right now. His Clarinet Concerto was commissioned by the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra in 2020 for an online stream. Now it can be experienced live in its revised version under the baton of Kent Nagano. And just like three years ago, the soloist is Rupert Wachter.

The Russian composer Vladimir Peskin is rarely featured in German programmes. His first trumpet concerto revels in the Late Romantic tradition, and the solo part, played by Felix Petereit, has virtuoso qualities in store for the audience.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Seventh, on the other hand, is political music – if there is such a thing. He began the work in 1811 and, at its premiere in 1813, performed it alongside his orchestral work »Wellingtons Sieg« (»Wellington’s Victory«), where he celebrated Britain’s victory over Napoleon in the form of a paraphrase of the British anthem »God Save the King«. The symphony bristles with jubilation and quasi-military rhythms. Years later, Richard Wagner went as far as to call it an »apotheosis of dance«.
