Farewell after 45 years
The Emerson String Quartet bids goodbye to Hamburg after 45 years, with music by Joseph Haydn, Antonín Dvořák, Anton Webern and Béla Bartók. The top New York ensemble has been a regular guest of the Hamburg Friends of Chamber Music over the years. As one of the first internationally important string quartets, they would play with alternating violins. Their concerts and numerous CD recordings have always been highly acclaimed.
The focus over the decades was always on the brilliant sound and the phenomenal technical ability of the musicians, who in the early years received guidance from greats such as the pianist Menahem Pressler. In addition to the core quartet repertoire, the Emerson String Quartet also embraced modern and contemporary music, helping a number of compositions find their way onto the world’s concert stages.
