Nordic Concerts • 1. Internationales Musikfest Hamburg
In this age of globalisation, only a few orchestras have managed to preserve their own distinctive style. Among the best in the world – and not just in this respect – is the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, which is often mentioned in the same breath as the Berlin Philharmonic and the Vienna Philharmonic. Tradition, continuity and a unique sound are the defining features of the orchestra, which has been directed by only six chief conductors in its 125-year history. This post is currently held by Mariss Jansons, but he hands on the honour of conducting the orchestra at this guest performance in Hamburg to his »star pupil«, Andris Nelsons. The 35-year-old Latvian is regarded as one of the most exciting conductors of his generation: in Birmingham, Nelsons stepped into the shoes of the great Sir Simon Rattle, and was recently appointed musical director of the renowned Boston Symphony Orchestra. With boundless energy and enthusiasm he inspires his musicians to give their very best performances. Along with Brahms’ Second Symphony, the concert programme presents the two faces of power: Macbeth, who succumbs to the temptations of tyrannical omnipotence, and Till Eulenspiegel, whose pranks are intended to deter his fellow men from falling into that very trap.
