The audience can look forward to hot rhythms and plenty of groove at this concert given by chief conductor Alan Gilbert and his NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra. The programme features music from the homeland of the New York native: works by great American composers. Award-winning jazz pianist Makoto Ozone joins the orchestra for Gershwin's famous »Rhapsody in Blue«, in which the composer mixed classical music with blues, ragtime and jazz, creating in his own words »music inherently American«. In his hit »An American in Paris«, on the other hand, he recorded impressions of the French capital, car horns inclusive. The centrepiece of the programme are the dances from Leonard Bernstein's legendary musical »West Side Story«, which transposes the tragic love story about Romeo and Julia to 1950s New York.
After the phenomenal success of the last couple of years, the concert series for the curious continues in 2020: one hour of classical music in the Elbphilharmonie Grand Hall just to try it out. No dress regulations, no rules of etiquette, just a relaxed atmosphere and affordable prices! The programme this time is not limited to classical music. Joining the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra is the NDR Radiophilharmonie with its charismatic conductor Andrew Manze. Mounting the rostrum with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra are Krzysztof Urbański and Alan Gilbert.
