Benjamin Britten hat ein umfangreiches und vielschichtiges Lied-Oeuvre hinterlassen. Zeitlebens lag ihm die intime Form besonders am Herzen, als Komponist wie als Klavierbegleiter (nicht nur seines Lebensgefährten Peter Pears’). Eine herausgehobene Stellung in seinem Schaffen nehmen die fünf Canticles ein, geistliche Lieder in unterschiedlichen Besetzungen, die einen idealen Blick auf Brittens musikalische Entwicklung ermöglichen. Das erste entstand 1947, das letzte 1974, zwei Jahre vor Brittens Tod. Die Canticles-Lücke in den 60er Jahren schließt der diesjährige Residenzkünstler Ian Bostridge im heutigen Programm mit den »Songs and Proverbs of William Blake«, die Britten 1965 für Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau komponierte. Außerdem erklingen drei Stücke britischer Barock-Komponisten, die Britten für Klavierbegleitung bearbeitet hat. Ian Bostridge hat sich für diesen ungewöhnlichen Abend, den zweiten seiner Residenz, hochkarätige Kollegen eingeladen, darunter den Star-Bariton Simon Keenlyside und den Solo-Hornisten der Berliner Philharmoniker, Stefan Dohr.

The Laeiszhalle is a separate concert hall located three kilometres away from the Elbphilharmonie.
We suggest visitors arrive at the Laeiszhalle main entrance not later than 30 minutes before the start of the concert or event. Late seating is not guaranteed and latecomers may not be admitted to the concert hall.
The entrance of the Recital Hall is located on Gorch-Fock-Wall.
