Benjamin Britten war ein universeller Komponist. Er schrieb Werke in allen Gattungen und Genres, für die verschiedensten Besetzungen und Anlässe – und verarbeitete dabei Einflüsse aus Musikgeschichte, Literatur und Zeitgeschehen zu einer ganz eigenen Tonsprache. Gleich nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs unternahm Britten gemeinsam mit dem Geiger Yehudi Menuhin eine Konzertreise durch die befreiten Konzentrationslager in Deutschland; seine Eindrücke verarbeitete er in einem Liedzyklus über Gedichte des 1631 gestorbenen Dichters John Donne. Es sind Meditationen über die Sünde des Menschen und den Tod, und Britten lässt den ergreifenden Zyklus beginnen mit Donnes Worten »Oh my blacke Soule!«. Den Heiligen Sonetten des John Donne zur Seite stellt Residenzkünstler Ian Bostridge Werke britischer Renaissance-Komponisten. Bei den Liedern u.a. von John Dowland wird der Tenor von der Lautenistin Elizabeth Kenny begleitet. Abgerundet wird der Abend durch Lesungen der Schauspielerin Victoria Trauttmansdorff, seit 1993 Ensemblemitglied am hiesigen Thalia Theater und regelmäßig in Film und Fernsehen präsent. Victoria Trautmansdorff hat sich dankenswerterweise bereit erklärt, die Gedichte und Sonnette von John Donne anstelle von Peter Jordan zu lesen, der seine Mitwirkungen leider aus Termingründen absagen musste.

The Laeiszhalle is a separate concert hall located three kilometres away from the Elbphilharmonie.
We suggest visitors arrive at the Laeiszhalle main entrance not later than 30 minutes before the start of the concert or event. Late seating is not guaranteed and latecomers may not be admitted to the concert hall.
The entrance of the Recital Hall is located on Gorch-Fock-Wall.
