Description

»With the Shostakovich Project, the Elbphilharmonie Konzerte have once again set a shining example,« the Hamburger Abendblatt commented on the Jerusalem Quartet’s performance of the complete cycle of Shostakovich’s string quartets during the 2013/2014 season. So it is great news that the four Russian-Israeli musicians return to the Laeiszhalle this season with a new series of concerts.

This time their focus is on the Hungarian national composer Béla Bartók. Expressionistic exuberance and new objectivity, unbridled energy and clever constructions, innovative playing techniques and influences from traditional folk music in Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and North Africa – these are just some of the elements Bartók incorporated into six quartets. Additionally, fateful events such as unhappy personal relationships, the First World War and the rise of Nazi Germany also left their mark on his works. In each of the concerts, the Jerusalem Quartet performs two Bartók quartets along with one work by his near-compatriot Joseph Haydn as a musical counterpart and point of reference.
