»For me, chamber music still holds the top spot,« Isabelle Faust said in an interview. Playing with a small group of like-minded musicians can provide moments of harmony and fulfilment that are not attainable individually. Faust’s colleague Carolin Widmann would most likely share that view. These two notable violinists are representative of the forthcoming »Chamber Music« series, which includes no less than three all-star teams.
Isabelle Faust comes with a first-class soloist ensemble, which includes Canadian cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras and her long-time recital partner Alexander Melnikov. Carolin Widmann on the other hand teams up with the acclaimed clarinettist Sharon Kam, and a quartet of highflying young soloists is formed around the pianist Martin Helmchen. Among the established ensembles, the Belcea Quartet makes a most welcome return, while the Chiaroscuro Quartet with violinist Alina Ibragimova performs here for the first time. The series opens with a concert by Alisa Weilerstein, whom critics have already compared to the cellist Jacqueline du Pré, undoubtedly one of the greatest instrumentalists of the 20th century.
