Levit feels a deeper connection to Beethoven than to any other composer. Key milestones in his career are closely linked to Beethoven’s music. »It is the most human music of all,« he says. »Everything that defines us as human beings – our characters, emotions, thoughts – is part of these works. It is music for us, about us.« He first encountered Beethoven as a teenager and was immediately captivated. The emotional intensity, the directness, the inner struggle: »I felt understood.« Since then, Levit has recorded all of Beethoven’s piano sonatas and explored them in a highly acclaimed podcast. In Hamburg, the works will not be performed in chronological order, but arranged according to a thoughtful dramaturgy. The choice of venue also plays a key role, as the concerts alternate between the Laeiszhalle and the Elbphilharmonie.
