Yo-Yo Ma / Kathryn Stott
Elbphilharmonie Opening Festival
Side by side with Leonard Berstein, Yo-Yo Ma made his first US television appearance at the age of eight. That was 50 years ago; since then the Chinese-American cellist has become the world’s most important soloist in his field.
As one would expect, Ma tells his chequered artistic life story in the form of a music, »Arc of Life«, which is also available on CD. Popular classics like Gounad’s arrangement of Bach’s »Ave Maria« – the first piece of music that Yo-Yo Ma played on the cello at the age of five – and the zippy »Tango Jalousie«, to major sonatas by Shostakovich and Franck can be enjoyed. Ma is accompanied by his closest artistic friend and piano partner of many years, Kathryn Stott.
