Yaron Herman
Jazz Piano
The music doesn’t lie in the notes
»Yaron Herman has internalised the European jazz idiom in its entirety«, wrote ZEIT once about the Israeli pianist, who only began playing the instrument at the age of 16. Today, Herman straddles the boundaries between jazz and classical, pop and Israeli folk. After his great dream of a basketball career was shattered by injury, Herman discovered a passion for the piano. There followed a meteoric rise to become one of the most highly regarded pianists of his generation.
Herman was one of the first to interpret pop songs by Britney Spears and Radiohead. He has also been influenced by Keith Jarrett, by Chopin and by Oriental music, and has re-worked early Baroque suites. For Herman, the music does not lie in the notes, but in the ideas, and – as with Miles Davis – even in the silence. Intellect meets intuition, fragile ballads meet difficult, free-tonal passages. Yaron Herman’s playing is physically dramatic, often taking him up high off his stool – as if the basketball player in him is still yearning to express himself.
