Ian Bostridge is one of the most important and original interpreters of Schubert’s »Winterreise«; he shares his knowledge and his practical experience with the public in his 2014 book »Schubert’s Winter Journey: Anatomy of an Obsession«. The outcome is an »incredibly clever book« (Die Welt), which the author discusses with Tom R. Schulz in the Laeiszhalle Brahms Foyer.

Only a handful of singers has penetrated to the heart of Schubert’s legendary song cycle »Winterreise« (Winter Journey) as the British tenor Ian Bostridge has done. He has spent decades approaching the cycle both practically and theoretically. »Schubert’s Winterreise is incontestably a great work of art that deserves to be as much a part of our mutual experience as the poetry of Shakespeare and Dante, the paintings of Van Gogh and Picasso, the novels of the Brontë sisters and Marcel Proust«, the singer himself declares. His mission is »to intensify the experience of those who already know the work, and to reach those people who have never heard it or have only heard of it«.

The Elbphilharmonie’s supporting programme offers a variety of different angles on the music performed – either to complement the concert itself, or as an experience in its own right. As a rule, the Elbphilharmonie+ events are interdisciplinary in nature: exhibitions, talks to accompany a particular concert or events featuring flamenco dancing or scat singing. They take place in the Elbphilharmonie itself in some cases, as well as in museums, libraries and local culture centres.
