In 1978, the Waseda Symphony Orchestra Tokyo made the European music scene prick up its ears. With its performance of Stravinsky’s »Rite of Spring«, the orchestra of the acclaimed Waseda University won against the strong competition at the International Youth Orchestra Competition in Berlin and left a lasting impression on Herbert von Karajan, the founder of the competition. Since then, there has been a close relationship between the Berlin Philharmonic and the orchestra of the Japanese elite university, which will perform at the Elbphilharmonie as part of its spring 2018 tour. In addition to works from the standard orchestra repertoire, they will also perform »Mono-Prism«, a spectacular work for taiko drums.
