Rising star from France
Thomas Ospital is a rising star of the organ: wherever the young French keyboard virtuoso appears, he leaves a delighted audience behind him. He learned his technique at the famous Conservatoire de Paris from organ masters like Olivier Latry und Thierry Escaich. He also provides regular evidence of his talent for improvisation, for example, as an accompanist for silent films. At his Elbphilharmonie debut under the aegis of the Hamburg International Music Festival, he shows himself to be an astute programmer, with a recital entirely tailored to fit the festival motto »Nature«.
The concert begins with the famous »Danse des Sauvages« from Jean-Philippe Rameau’s ballet-opera »Les Indes galantes«. The scene depicts the encounter between the French and Spanish troops and the Indians of the North American forests and has a truly catchy melody. French composer Joseph Bonnal’s »Paysages euskariens« is set in the Basque region. We also hear two pastorales – one by Johann Sebastian Bach and the other by César Franck; no other genre stands as clearly for nature as the pastorale. The recital programme is rounded off by an improvisation by Thomas Ospital and the dramatic »Evocation II« from the pen of his erstwhile teacher Escaich.
