As chief conductor Franz Welser-Möst recently revealed, not without a certain pride, the Cleveland Orchestra now has the youngest audience in America: 20 percent of its concertgoers are under 25! This appetite for classical music is fuelled above all by exciting programmes that bridge the gap between tradition and the present. It is precisely this philosophy that is reflected in the second concert of the »Elbphilharmonie Summer« festival with the US Top Five Orchestra, featuring Schubert’s great Symphony in C Major symphony, as well as works by the septuagenarian Wolfgang Rihm.
The music world celebrated Rihm’s 70th birthday last March. And a man who has made a significant impact on contemporary music with what is now more than 500 compositions. And as is the case with the orchestral pieces »Verwandlung 2 & 3«, written in 2005 and 2010 respectively, he often occupies himself with a particular basic musical idea for a period of years. In the process, Rihm’s unwavering loyalty to tradition, to the Beethovens, Schumanns and Schuberts, often comes to the fore.
From the Viennese arch-romantic Schubert, Franz Welser-Möst conducts his Symphony No. 8 – about which Clara Schumann famously once said: »There are human voices, all instruments, and stimulating beyond measure.«
