Terence Blanchard »Absence«
featuring the E-Collective with Turtle Island Quartet – FoCus Jazz Trumpet
Romantic Defiance
The stylistically far-reaching work of the living saxophone legend Wayne Shorter was a significant influence on the trumpeter Terence Blanchard. With »Absence«, the American trumpeter has now released an album that pays homage to Shorter’s work as a composer.
Born in 1962, Blanchard divides his time between Los Angeles and his home city of New Orleans, and he too has made a name for himself both as a trumpeter and composer. He has written music for several films by the director Spike Lee; and in 2021, his opera »Fire Shut Up in My Bones« was the first opera by an Afro-American composer to be performed in the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
Blanchard recorded his album »Absence« with his e-collective led by pianist Fabian Almazan and guitarist Charles Altura, and with the Turtle Island String Quartet, which gives the music a chamber music feel. Blanchard’s own sound as a trumpeter is probably best described by borrowing the title of one of his earlier albums: »Romantic Defiance«.
