Symphony Device
»Greatest Hits« / Festival for Contemporary Music
An original sound installation complete with live music accompanies the opening of the »Greatest Hits« festival, which presents contemporary music at Kampnagel and at the Elbphilharmonie from 1 to 4 November. For the occasion, the music research centre Tempo Reale in Florence, founded by Luciano Berio back in 1987, has put together various pieces of household equipment to create a »Symphony Device«. In addition to kitchen mixers and vacuum cleaners, the device features equipment from yesteryear such as a whirring dot-matrix printer and an old-school phone with a dial.
From 1 to 4 November, the »Greatest Hits« festival presents contemporary music at Kampnagel and the Elbphilharmonie. The focus this year is on the composers Gérard Grisey und Harry Partch. The latter was a contemporary of Arnold Schönberg and Aaron Copland; in the desert near San Diego Parch developed his own tuning system with home-made instruments which feature in many of the festival concerts.
