Sophie Rennert / Benjamin Appl / Lieder Recital
Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival
»Eve-of-wedding party! My darling Robert gave me a beautiful bridal gift: ›Myrthen‹ – I was very moved!« writes Clara Schumann in her diary in 1840. Robert Schumann had given her an exquisite deluxe edition with gold print, elaborate margin decoration and a personal inscription. The opening line of the first song was »You my soul, you my heart« – what a romantic way to declare your love!
A few months later, Schumann began considering the idea of composing a song cycle with Clara. In January 1841 he writes, »The idea of publishing a volume of songs with Clara inspired me to go to work. From Monday to Monday nine new songs were completed.« Clara later contributed three songs, and gave them to Robert on his 31st birthday on 8 June 1841. These works are a testimony to a great love, and are performed on this evening by the young Austrian mezzosoprano Sophie Rennert and the Gramophone »New Artist of the Year 2016« Benjamin Appl in the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall.
