The art of hearing anew

»When I am deeply absorbed in a composer, I physically and mentally begin to feel like him.« That is how the Hungarian pianist Sir András Schiff once described his intensive engagement with the great figures of music history. And this spiritual kinship was reflected time and time again in live performances and on multi-award-winning recordings of epochal piano cycles by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Schumann.

Even though Schiff has engaged intensively with the masterpieces of classical music over the course of his 50-year career, these works are, for Schiff, predestined to »be heard anew again and again«.

Playing on historic instruments is one way that offers him new perspectives. He also investigates the spirit and magic of these musical works of art by »framing« them in new ways in fascinating programmes. »I want us to bring a breath of fresh air into concert life. The best way of doing that is through good programmes.« With his solo recital, Schiff – who has just celebrated his 70th birthday – now achieves exactly that.
