Simply Quartet
FAST LANE – Young top musicians getting ready for a big career / Potrait Thomas Larcher
Viennese quartet rising high
In the new series »Fast Lane«, Simply Quartet journey through three centuries of string quartet history. Alongside classics by Haydn and Dvořák, the Vienna-based ensemble also plays a modern work by Thomas Larcher. The Simply Quartet shone at the »Rising Stars« festival in the Elbphilharmonie last year. And the international careers of the four musicians from China, Norway and Austria have brought them numerous prestigious awards.
The concert opens with one of Joseph Haydn’s experimental »Sun Quartets« of 1772, a milestone in the »supreme discipline« of chamber music. In his 2015 work »Lucid Dreams«, Thomas Larcher follows the traces of his Austrian compatriot Haydn. In this work, the musical border crosser – to whom the Elbphilharmonie is dedicating a spotlight this season – largely adheres to conventional forms and playing techniques.
Antonín Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 13 marks an endpoint: the work was composed in 1895, immediately after his three-year stay in New York, and exudes a sense of joy at seeing his Bohemian homeland again.
