The sounds of the North
The sounds of the North can be heard particularly clearly in Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s overture »The Hybrids«. The music of the piece is inspired by the wild landscapes of the Hebridean Islands off the Scottish coast and conveys the atmosphere of mysterious ruins, rough cliffs and stormy waters, just as Mendelssohn himself experienced on a trip to Fingal’s Cave in the Hebrides north of the Scottish coast.
