The Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra under Andris Poga makes an extraordinary contribution to SHMF 2021’s Schubert retrospective with Luciano Berio’s »Rendering«, which is a nuanced graphic depiction on the basis of a »pencil sketch«. In Berio’s case, that sketch is an unfinished symphony by Franz Schubert. Berio’s aim was not to complete or reconstruct the fragments – which he describes as »fairly complex and of great beauty« – but to approach them in the spirit of restoration. The result is an exciting work in three movements in which the passages that can be unequivocally attributed to Schubert alternate with reflective, seemingly fragile connecting pieces.
