Giants on Lake Garda
Gert Voss and Harald Schmidt sit in André Heller’s villa on Lake Garda talking anecdotally about the German theatre scene. This meeting of two TV and theatre greats initiated by Heller resulted in the 2010 film »Scheitern, scheitern, besser scheitern«, which brings together many bizarre stories from the everyday life of an actor into a nice chat.
While Gert Voss, who passed away in 2014 and whom the »Times« nominated as the best actor in Europe in 1995, had a brilliant career which took him to the prestigious Burgtheater in Vienna, Harald Schmidt initially failed as an actor – and subsequently made an impact on the local TV landscape as a presenter and entertainer for decades. However, Schmidt remained an ardent admirer of the theatre world as transpires in the film: He has seen many of the most famous Voss roles and knows numerous plays by heart. Voss is impressive with exciting stories and comical imitations of legendary directors, such as Claus Peymann, George Tabori and Peter Zadek.
