Once again this season, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen turns its attention to Joseph Haydn’s symphonies. Chief conductor Paavo Järvi has selected Symphonies No. 95 and 98 from the cycle of »London Symphonies« for performance. These were composed in 1791–92 during Haydn’s first journey to the English capital. Symphony No. 95 in C Minor is the only minor-key symphony in the London cycle, and the only one without a slow introduction, but like the other symphonies penned by Haydn in a minor key, it is by no means a sad or sombre work throughout. In contrast, Symphony No. 98 features a highly expressive slow movement and an unusually long finale with a virtuosic harpsichord solo.
