Overwhelming and intense

Conductor Christian Thielemann has had to pull out of his concerts with the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden in the Elbphilharmonie at short notice due to a persistent shoulder issue. Fortunately, Tugan Sokhiev has agreed to stand in for him. This change in conductor has also resulted in a change in the programme: Johannes Brahms’s First Symphony will now be performed instead of Anton Bruckner’s Fifth. In addition, star violinist Julia Fischer will be performing Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. Tickets remain valid.

Discount for all under 30: Exclusively for this concert, anyone under 30 can book the REDTicket. This means that even the best available seats only cost € 10. Proof of age must be shown when attending the concert, otherwise the difference to the original price will have to be paid.

As a result of the last-minute reshuffle, the programme for the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden’s second concert in the Elbphilharmonie now features two truly great works. In the first half of the concert, Julia Fischer presents – in Beethoven’s sublime Violin Concerto in D Major – one of the most important works in the violin repertoire. It’s a striking work right from the opening, with the five unaccompanied beats on the timpani.

And the rest of the concerto sees Beethoven continue at the top of his art – in the multi-coloured orchestral writing and in the challenging solo part. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that Johannes Brahms still had issues regarding measuring up to Beethoven even decades later. The Hamburg composer worked on perfecting his First Symphony for a total of fourteen years – the result speaks for itself.
