Tracing the World’s Most Famous Sufi Mystic
Dschalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad ar-Rūmī – known as Rumi for short – is the best-known Sufi mystic today. The teachings that he evolved in the 13th century are based on the belief that love is the principle guiding force in the universe. Getting closer to God through love was for Rumi the path to true fulfilment in life. He expressed his thoughts in masterly poetry that has survived the centuries, and still exercises an influence today. On jazz musician Christophe Schweizer, for instance: Schweizer has composed highly unusual music to accompany a selection of Rumi’s texts, and he performs these pieces in the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall together with Berlin-based vocalist Almut Kühne and a group of soloists.
