Dramatic accents

There were a few positive side effects to the corona pandemic. One of these was that the Quatuor Modigliani made use of the obligatory break in concert activity to devote their attention to Schubert’s string quartets for the entirety of 2021. The outcome is an acclaimed recording of all 15 quartets written by the Viennese composer, which is being released in time for the 225th anniversary of his birth in 2022. In addition, the world-famous French quartet is making three guest appearances at the Elbphilharmonie in the 2022/23 season; the three concerts have an all-Schubert programme in each case.

The Quatuor Modigliani’s second Schubert recital sparkles with playfulness and drama. This applies particularly to the famous »Rosamunde« Quartet that brings the concert to a magnificent end. Here, Schubert quotes his incidental music to Wilhelmine von Cézy’s play »Rosamunde, Fürstin von Zypern«, where idyll alternates with darkness throughout. But the opening Quartet D. 353 with its lively finale and the early quartet D. 46 with powerful outbursts likewise show the feeling for drama evident in so many of Schubert’s works.
