Philharmonic Chamber Music Concert
Schwerpunkt Charles Ives
»The American Charles Ives wrote his ›better‹ Second String Quartet in protest against the banalisation and emasculation of string quartet music. The piece depicts interactions between four men who talk, argue and get along well together – a modern version of Goethe’s metaphor for the supreme discipline of the string quartet: ›four intelligent people conversing among themselves‹.
As a pioneer of the avant-garde, Ives expresses the concept of a society without limits or repression in his music. In Europe, Zemlinsky was working on his Second String Quartet around the same time. Franz Werfel described the Austrian composer as a ›primal melodist‹ and praised him for ›this warmth, this exuberance that is unique to him‹. Zemlinsky stood on the threshold between tradition and innovation – he was known as a Romantic yet he inspired the development of the Second Viennese School around Schönberg. The concert opens with a string quartet by Haydn, taking us back to the source, to the first phase of the genre’s history.« (Bettina Rühl)
