Philharmonia Orchestra / Esa-Pekka Salonen
Sibelius / Saariaho / Prokofiev
The London-based Philharmonia Orchestra is an ensemble of outstanding quality. Formed by Herbert von Karajan in its early years, it has sharpened its profile over the decades. Today it is one of the most sought after orchestras worldwide. Its repertoire goes far beyond the standard canons. Recording film music and game soundtracks are just as much part of its portfolio as its involvement in music education projects and digital innovations.
Principal conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen’s association with the orchestra encompasses decades of close work and a continuously growing harmony. Just like Salonen’s ensemble, violinist Pekka Kuusisto explores cross-disciplinary projects and experiments with jazz and electronic instruments.
The programme of their guest performance at the Elbphilharmonie ranges from the glowing »Lumière et pesanteur« to Prokofiev’s tongue-in-cheek violin concerto and the expansive soundscapes of Jean Sibelius’s symphonies.
